Some of the Harmful Substances in Cigarettes

Last Updated: January 31, 2012

There are over 4,000 chemicals and compounds found in the average cigarette, and many of these have been proven to cause cancer in humans. A few of these are listed below.

Tar

This is one of the most dangerous ones…tar is the black, gooey substance that accumulates inside the lungs after they condense the smoke that is inhaled. This nasty stuff covers the delicate cilia which in turn causes decreased lung function, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Benzene

This is an industrial solvent used in the production of many other chemicals and it has been proven to cause leukemia when humans are exposed to it.

Nicotine

This is the massively addictive alkaloid substance that keeps us coming back for more cigarettes, day after day. Nicotine is extremely poisonous, even in small amounts. In fact, one drop of pure nicotine on a person’s skin would kill them within the hour. Although it is not directly linked to cancer, nicotine does speed the heart up, constrict blood vessels and increase the chances of developing blood clots.

Ammonia

A colorless gas with a sharp odor, ammonia is added by the cigarette manufacturers to literally make the nicotine molecules more effective, thus making cigarettes more addictive.

Carbon Monoxide

This is the same stuff that comes out of the exhaust pipe on your car! It is a highly toxic gas that replaces the actual oxygen in your red blood cells because of it’s ability to be absorbed a lot quicker.

This is just five of the thousands of harmful substances that can be found in cigarettes. When you quit smoking cigarettes, you will also quit ingesting these toxic chemicals in mass quantities!
